Isla Mujeres

A short boat ride from the city of Cancun takes you to Isla Mujeres otherwise known as the Isle of Women.  This island was dedicated to the fertility goddess Ix Chel and was later made the retirement home of the infamous Jean Lafitte, a pirate from the 1800’s.  Today you’ll find great snorkeling locations and be able to sample the local lobster specialties.  The only town on this island has a sleepy relaxed feel to it and offers a beautiful beach, great shopping and some lovely restaurants.  There is the El Garrafon National Marine Park to visit with its coral reef to marvel at.  At the bottom end of the island is an old Maya temple which has breathtaking views over the Caribbean – just an idyllic setting for luxury holidays.

Turtle outings on Cancun luxury holidays

The island of Cozumel was originally a holy shrine to Ix Chel.  These days pilgrims make their way to dive sites and other tourists hit the stunning beaches, visit the old Maya relics and the lazy Mexican town, San Miguel de Cozumel.  It has a lovely square where people congregate in the evenings.  There is a little museum that runs turtle outings at night throughout May to September when the mother turtles arrive on shore to dig their nests.  Conservationists take the newly laid eggs to a hatchery to protect these creatures from poachers and the hatchlings are then provided a safe passage back to the sea.  Visitors can help out with both stages.
The beaches on Cozumel are stunning but careful of the tides.  Scuba diving is breathtaking here and the Palancar Reef is a Mecca for underwater enthusiasts.  There are colourful tropical fish to see and beautiful coral reefs on these luxury holidays. 
The fortress city of Tulum is a regal setting for quality holidays and is a haven for Maya sites.  There are some stunning temples to visit including the Temple of the Descending God.  If you get weary of sightseeing there is a beautiful beach just a short walk away.
